Chetham's School of Music

Location: Manchester

Client: Sir Robert McAlpine

Value: £3 million

Duration: 31 weeks

This prestigious scheme in the heart of Manchester for the new music college was awarded by Sir Robert McAlpine for the super-structure package. Our performance on previous contracts with this client were instrumental in securing this contract.

The new home for Chetham’s School of Music, an extension to the existing Chetham’s site, features performance spaces, a dedicated area for outreach work, a central atrium, music practice area, teaching rooms and academic classrooms. A new bridge links the new school building to the existing campus, alongside the entrance on Long Millgate.

The completion of this £31 million project is just the first step in a series of major developments that will change the internal facilities and the public face of Chetham’s.

  • Innovative solutions developed for a number of temporary works designs, working at height.
  • Despite the confined city centre location, the programme was maintained, even through extreme weather conditions.
  • Designed to be BREEAM excellent-rated, all the reinforcement, concrete and timber materials were supplied with the appropriate certification.
