The Word project in South Shields, Nominated for the 2016 Concrete Awards

Jul 01, 2016

We are proud to announce we have been Nominated for the 2016 Excellence in Concrete Awards for recently completed project, The Word project in South Shields.

Now in its 48th year, this prestigious awards initiative showcases the use of concrete as a structural material. Kate Silverton, the well-known journalist and broadcaster, will be guest host for the ceremony, being held on Thursday 17 November 2016 at The Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.

The form of the building takes inspiration from an unfolding book, supporting the priority use for the building. The Word will marry the traditional library with a superb 21st Century digital environment, reflecting the fact that the written word comes in so many different forms these days, from screen plays to social media. Inside you will see clean, neutral and contemporary colours and materials, incorporated with more traditional, rustic and tarnished looking shades. There will be unique features such as twists in the glass, relating back to the tide. The landmark centre will also offer a range of facilities including exhibition space, computer gaming area, design and innovation studio with 3D printers, digitised archives, meeting rooms, children’s immersive storytelling area, IT suite, café and a rooftop restaurant and terrace providing views over the river. The materials and colour palette used throughout the building will represent that twist of both tradition and technology.
