Torness Converter Station EGL1

Project Description

Cidon Construction was appointed by METLEN to deliver the reinforced concrete and civil engineering works for the Torness Converter Station, a key component of the Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) project.

EGL1 is a major UK energy infrastructure scheme that will create a 2GW High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission link between Torness in East Lothian and Hawthorn Pit in County Durham via the North Sea. The project will strengthen the UK's electricity network and support the transmission of renewable energy across the country.

The Torness Converter Station forms a critical part of this infrastructure, providing the facilities required to convert and transfer electricity between transmission systems. Cidon's scope includes the construction of reinforced concrete converter station foundations, transformer plinths and equipment bases, cable trenches, industrial floor slabs, drainage and ducting infrastructure, earthing systems, gas membrane installation, fencing, hard landscaping and associated civil engineering works.

Delivered within a live, high-security environment, the project requires meticulous planning, engineering coordination and programme management. The works involve substantial reinforced concrete structures and large-volume concrete pours requiring stringent quality control, temperature monitoring and durability measures to ensure long-term performance within the exposed coastal environment.

Upon completion, the infrastructure delivered by Cidon will provide the durable foundations and supporting structures required for the long-term operation of the converter station, helping facilitate the efficient transmission of low-carbon electricity between Scotland and England.
